screaming, crying, growing up

By Isabella Shenouda

we all start out the same
screaming and crying

wishing we could return to the only home we’ve ever known
its quite traumatic if you think about it

a small, innocent thing
brutally ripped away from the safe comfort of darkness
the warmth of isolation in its own personal room

and while we all may start out the same
we will never return to that state of unity

we change, evolve
grow up

and the world does, too

for some, it might happen in happy homes
full of love and wonder

for the rest of us,
that is not the case

all that screaming and crying
at such a young age
was to prepare

to train, to warn us
about the horrors
of growing up
